Tropicana Las Vegas
Standing out on the Las Vegas Strip as a beautiful landmark for well over 50 years, the Tropicana Las Vegas is a classic bit of old school Las Vegas charm.
Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas
One of the best-known vintage Vegas hotels (Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas) is spending a lot of time and money adding a little bit of modern charm -- but don't fret. Rooms will stay open during all three phases of renovation over the next few years, with maybe a handful of room closings, but nothing that hotel guests will notice. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent to update their fairly shrimpy 60,000-square-foot casino, including adding new carpet, a few restaurants, an entire wing that adds 100,000 square feet of conference space, an additional 600 rooms, and on and on. We hear rumors of a new sports book and poker room right next to the casino, as well.
Cheap rooms at the Tropicana are easy to come by -- the hotel does a ton of negotiating with airlines and other hotels to occasionally bring prices down. Right now, for instance, the Tropicana is offering 40% off your stay if you book between now and the end of the summer. After calling the Tropicana myself, I learned that simply asking for a lower rate sometimes works -- the clerk on the other end of the line immediately offered me a room at half price if I booked for a different day. A reminder that, when looking for cheap rooms in Las Vegas, sometimes all you have to do is ask.
Cheap Rooms at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino
Another way to get into the Tropicana Hotel and Casino on the cheap -- stay a little longer. If you book a stay of four nights or more at the Tropicana, you'll probably be offered a much lower rate. Right now, the Tropicana is offering one night free when you book four, hoping you'll extend your stay and spend a little more at the gaming tables.
A big draw at the Tropicana Las Vegas is the massive pool -- five acres of tropical goodness, three swimming pools, an area dotted with whirlpools and hot tubs, plenty of beautiful waterfalls and foliage as far as the eye can see. If you're lucky, during your stay the hotel will open blackjack tables right in the pool, hoping people will swim up and drop some cash. Travelling with kids to Las Vegas? Once they see the Tropicana's pool, they won't worry about being bored.
How old school Vegas is the Tropicana? The hotel still has a fully staffed barber shop. When you want to look like a million bucks, a fresh haircut is the way to go. Just down the hall from the barber shop is a wacky, retro "island themed" wedding chapel. The Tropicana has the gritty Vegas thing down pat.
While the Tropicana sticks out a bit among more modern hotels and casinos, it still stands as a reminder of what Las Vegas used to be, evoking a sense of nostalgia but still offering the modern conveniences and pleasures hotel guests have come to expect.
